If it was the one just coming out then yes..a bargain. The current model, more likely a death trap. I think a mk2 v6 cup would be a great idea though..have to wonder if theyd all be competing with each others sales however.
You can get a half rollcage in and attach the harnesses to them but that doesnt really matter as i think unless you have money to burn for insurance etc there aint no point. Shame, i agree that the driving position is too ford transit!
I think its a bit of a pointless comparison as theyre just not a like in any way. Id take an EVO over a scooby, cos they look better, if you can say that an EVO is good looking!
Your a brave boy getting a cup in the winter! I spoke to a 172 owner who fitted a carbon viper kit with relocation pipe with no problems. If you plan to modify your 172s quite a bit you might as well get a chip anyway..cheap power after all.

Do the steering wheel controls still work with other headunits?? and do the headunits improve volume and clarity? Thing is id have to replace the speakers as well cos the amount of vibration is sh*te...
Mk1s lighter, tad quicker, not noticeable. though really...starting to look a little dated compared to mk2s (sorry!) Ive heard mk2s are more fun to drive.
Why does a better head unit improve things? I spent extra getting the factory version and as far as i know an aftermarket cd headunit (where you put cds in the headunit, not a changer in the boot) is very expensive? Also a flashy headunit promotes nickability!

I have same spec clio, it produces all its power high up, and being light, it can be suprisingly quick once you get it going. Ive beaten a Pulsar on my favourite B roads, its about commitment and knowing what your car can do, thats how you can exploit it. A good driver can account for 100bhp...
You could get a nice big shiny radiator so it looks like an intercooler..then youd look like a hard b*****d.
