Straightening can be a real PITA. Have spent ages trying to do this but wide angle distortion (12mm, ignore exif) is very difficult!

If it will get rarely used wouldn't it be just as well to use your phone camera, assuming you have a decent phone cam? Mine can take nice sharp 8 megapixel shots and I doubt they are massively worse than a compact can do. Ok it can't zoom.....!

Does anyone else think Nikon could have used something like the new Sony 24mp full frame sensor without really taking an iso hit but improving low iso resolution?
Looks great, full frame and 'only' 16m of sonys finest pixels. That should ensure stunning high iso pics and each pixel should have room to stretch out ;)

I personally don't understand the 'craze' for buying an expensive dslr and then purposely making your photos look $hit.

Theres not a lot of 'walkaround' photography you can't do with an 18-55 and as with most people just starting out, the quality of the kit lens may well be far superior to the quality of the person carrying it.
