Tamron or Sigma 10-20 or 24

Nope it's an ultra wide angle, macro lenses generally refer to a close focus ability rather than a specific focal length, that said they tend to come in 35, 50 and 100 mm flavors

Help with getting the best out of a bridge camera

Stick it to point and shoot and away you go! Unfortunately with a compact sensor you will never get the depth of field to bother messing with aperture. Shutter speed is worth looking up though :)

Where can this test card be obtained Phil? Am I right in saying such issues wouldn't be so much of an issue at f11 on say the sigma 10-20 due to much beter dof?

    Fixed Lens - 35mm or 50mm?

Nikon 35 is very highly rated and the focal length will be more usable than a 50 on a crop sensor

    Lens

Lol nearly everyone has a different opinion, take from that what you will. My own conclusion would be unless your a pro or need edge to edge sharpness then in most cases a cheap lens will absolutely suffice. My advice would be to upgrade when you need to, not when you want to. :)

If your still very much learning then the kit lens will be of a quality way above what you will need. Folk do like to slate their kit lenses on here but they are for the most part very competent with good centre sharpness. Personally I'd stick with it and wait until you outgrow it.

    Nikon '1'

I think the advantage of these and other mirrorless systems is their size in that you can pop them in a pocket and have in effect a dslr quality or in some cases, better than dslr quality. You can take them where you wouldn't take a dslr and the picture opportunities triple! To balance out that...
