active sub is one with an amp already built in as part of the package
passive means you have to purchase an amp on top
either will work with your headunit
take out the glovebox,youll see a massive gap above the radio where all the heater controls,etc are,module can be placed there.positioning the buttons is entirely personal preference,put a peice of bluetack on the back of it and stick it in a few locations to see where you are happiest with.most...

entire door would need to be done for full effect,you need to put something between the speaker and the door panel to make it tight and secure,i use sound deadening carpet to reduce any rattles from speaker to panel between the point of fixation
buying baffles will not increase sound quality,they are designed to bring a speaker out or fit cars where they are 3 point mounting saving purchasing speaker adapters.
you want to improve sound quality,get dynamatting to start with
cabasse,tuner or update list these work with them all
if you change to an aftermarket headunit then this will become void.

if your looking for something a bit more oem becker or clarion do some that look a little less obvious than sony etc

if its old you may find the jvc has loom,just the standard iso plug,your sony loom will plug directly into the lead in the back of the jvc then you can test it
is it all speakers?just front?just rear?only 1?your sony should plug straight in to the iso loom,jvc use the same wiring loom as sony if its 01/02 odd onwards depending upon model
do a search as another member on here had the same issue but i cant remember for the life of me what he said the issue was
if it isnt what he had they are quite common to have issues with the fascia not contacting correctly
