    Home Server...?

WHS2011 is built on top of 2008 R2. It depends what you want from a server. I am running WHS on my microserver and it does what i wanted perfectly (mainly backing up the home machines and sharing a bit of media.

Good luck with that attitude. Theres aways someone that knows more than you. I don't think you should look down on anyone as we all started at the bottom.

    Building a Server?

So if someone said to you "I have configured my disk set as RAID ten" you are going to look at them confused? No, you know exactly what they mean.

    Building a Server?

    Building a Server?

Hopefully one thing you have learnt from all the posts here is you really can't spec out a new system without a clear vision of what you need to achieve. There are a lot of knowledgeable people here but without you providing clear direction on I what's needed you are going to be overwhelmed with...

As I think has already been mentioned, SBS will guide you through most of the configuration. If you can just learn the basics then you can build on that knowledge as you start to work with the product.

    RAID 10 is not required.

    Building a Server?

Yeah, guess that is better than filling a paper tray with nice clean cut A4 and silent printing. Nothing can match the pleasure you get tearing the tractor holes off the paper, reprinting when you f**k it up and listening to the noise they make.

    Building a Server?

You XOR A1, A2 and A3 to give you Ap. I wouldn't worry about that for now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID#RAID_Parity

    Building a Server?

The main advantage of RAID 10 is its read/write performance. From what you have told us about your friends business hes not going to need it. Waste of money.

    Building a Server?

I still standby what I said earlier. Leave possible solutions until you understand exactly what he wants. If he suddenly decides he needs email, web access to all desktops, remote working etc you are going to need to look at a different design to simply sharing a few files and database. Good Luck.

    Building a Server?

RAID does not prevent corruption. Most corruption is at the file system level which RAID has no impact on.

    Building a Server?

The RDP stuff he mentioned was client side (He mentioned Win7) along with a VPN so users could connect to their machines remotely. I feel this is a bit excessive for 5 users (along with the suggestion of teaming NICs) as the requirement to work remotely is probably minimal. As I mentioned...

    Building a Server?

Don't take this the wrong way but reading some of the posts I think you are taking on too much at this stage. Why don't you have your friend get someone in and you shadow them? Going forward you could maintain the system and build on the knowlege gained from someone experienced in these small...
