The difference is because some 172s seem to come out of the factory down on power. I had a MK2 172 before my MK1 and it had 16bhp less at the wheels than another mk2 172 RRd the same day. Whats more, mine didnt get the lowest output that day :o
I dont think anyone has ever adequately explained...
Why ever not? Not every thread has to turn into a slanging match. The fact is that the F4R engine puts out around 166bhp. Doesnt bother me, its still fast enough and most people assume it has 172bhp!
I think when the engines are dynod out of the car, they get 166bhp.
Theres a Rolling Road day in Bury this coming weekend with loads of 172s going. Will have some at the wheel figures then...
If youre looking for performance then youve got to go for the VTS. The VTS is also dead handy for cheap and effective breathing modifications. Only problem with it is that its a Saxo!
The 1.6 16v Clio is a nice car, but not especially quick and def. not as quick as a VTS.
Ive had 4 clios in approx. 2 years  Will not be having another one though thanks to the piss poor build quality and useless customer service
It all depends on how heavy your right foot is. It will do more than 30mpg in traffic if youre careful with it, but somehow I always end up with more like 27mpg in rush hour town driving.
Motorway driving can get you 40+mpg, again depending on how well behaved you are.
The 1.4 16v is a fair bit nippier than the 1.2 8v. Its still a fairly low insurance group, but has around 98bhp. I had one and loved it. I only got rid of it so I could get a 172.
I reckon were going to see some all over the place torque readings this weekend at the Bury RR day. Every RR day Ive been to there have been 172s with odd/bad torque curves. Isnt this the reason that the RSport/GrpN ECU works so well, as it somehow smooths the delivery of the torque?
I think the two main culprits are "axle tramp" or a loose engine mount. Mine didnt used to do it, but it does it badly now. Even in 2nd gear if Im giving it a bit of stick.
Sounds about right as a wheel figure for a properly running 172.
Would like to see the graph actually. Either use the Cliosport uploader or send it to me at mailto:rhys172@blueyonder.co.uk">rhys172@blueyonder.co.uk and Ill host it.
Just fitted 4 Spax springs to my mk1. Theyve totally transformed the handling of the car, and cornering is now fun rather than terrifying.
Only downside is quite a harsh ride on bumpy surfaces, but the upside outweighs the downside easily....!
Agree with 007. Provided the mods are out of sight in the engine bay, do what you like. Just dont change the wheels, give it a bad boy bonnet, put neons on it or anything like that...!
