Having worked in a support environment I know that the person you're calling for support may in fact know less than you and be referring to info sheets or a computerised support system. It's shocking really. Building pc's is a piece of piss. For a novice it just looks scary.

I assume when you say reboot you mean reboot the laptop and not the router? perhaps check for updated ethernet drivers?

You shouldn't need antivirus software unless you're sharing files with unprotected windows machines. As for firewall I believe UFW is installed by default now. UFW = uncomplicated firewall, which is a front end for iptables.

as openoffice is crossplatform you could always install it on the windows machine that you use aswell.

I had some problems with software on the beta namely games so went back to Vista. Don't know if those problems would exist with the RC or not. If you want a play with something new then go for it, as long as you have Vista on a DVD or something you can always reinstall.

LAN maps are exactly what I'm after mate. I play COD4 LAN with my step kids. It's one of the few things that keeps them quiet but we've played the standard maps to death now.
