Yeah, it's definitely the way to do it. I carefully removed the centre bit by grinding off the plastic welds and then sliced it through the middle, you can just make out the cut line.
If I had another dash to use i'd be able to get it even neater but it's good enough, once the dash is flocked...
Small update
Had a bit of a set back with the front suspension, got a plan on how to sort it but will have to wait till the new year to get the bits.
In the mean time I carried on with the dash, stalks and steering column etc
Took a bit of jiggery pokery and some trial and error but...
Yeah, as Gray says, flaring the holes stiffens the panel up and looks a lot better too.
As I mentioned I made mine but there's a guy on ebay that sells them...
Had a bit of a late start today, waiting in the house for a few deliveries
When I got to the workshop I sat down to have my lunch with a cuppa, while I was sitting in my trusty thinking chair looking at the back of the car I decided it was time to lose some excess metal from the back panel...
The kit from Custom Cages uses 40mm x2mm tube, Demon Tweeks looks like 25mmx2mm and T45 vs CDS, either will be fine though. Mine basically cost me nothing, cant remember when I bought the 40mm tube but worst case both sides owe me about £50 all in.
Yeah the holes have been flared, I made up a...
I've had loads of project cars over the past 10 years, dread to think what I've spent and ultimately lost doing so, but I've enjoyed my self and for me thats what matters. Least you can look back and say I had or I did, rather than I wish I had etc.
When you're at this stage in a build it can...
Cheers,
Yeah the workshop is pretty good considering what it cost me to build it, just fortunate to have a mate with a huge barn thats largely unused, I pay his old dear something every month for elecy and I've got free rein to come and go as I please, dont think I'd be able to build the car...
What is it you use your car for then? How did you manage to wear out the poly bushes? Not heard of that happening before.
The wishbones look very nice! as does the blade anti-roll bar, do you intend to sell these?
It certainly is taking up a lot of time! Girlfriend can testify to that lol :D
Confusing in what way?
The guy I'm refering to isnt on this forum, his job is preparing and restoring some very exotic race cars, mainly older historics, old F1 cars, Can-Am stuff but not limited to that, he's...
Cheers again for the comments guys.
Not a whole lot more to report, was late back to the workshop today, had to pick up a few bits on the way home.
Continued with the brackets for the steering column, had another go with the Tig set today, slowly starting to get to grips with it but I've got a...
I'm just going on what I've been advised and from experience there is merit in keeping some compliance in the suspension pick ups.
A touring car will most likely have rose joints everywhere, but they tend to run on very smooth surfaces and have a huge budget to work and develop suspension etc...
I had seen those kits from pure-motorsport but decided to go with the uprated poly bushes.
Been advised by someone who knows his stuff regards suspension that if your running the car on perfectly smooth circuits fully rose jointed suspension can be of benefit but in most situations you need...
I'm sure the new test is going to cause problems for a lot of people but if they apply the new rules to the letter, just about every rally car out there would fail so there's got to be some sort of common sense applied.
If a car which is obviously for competition use comes in for a test and they...
It's got to have wipers, indicators, fog light and brake lights etc anyway so it's not that much more to get it road legal, minimal extra wire required and the stuff i'm using weighs heehaw anyway.
It'll also be handy to have it road legal to give it a shake down once it's built, got some...
I'll get a few pics tomorrow when i'm back at the workshop, so far though I've not flared any of the holes in the tailgate, most of them are at the top where the spolier sits so would be tricky to get to the opposite side to assemble to flaring tool.
There's not a whole lot left of my tailgate...
I was hoping to use that pedal box but unfortunately I couldnt get it to fit so a mate bought it for his car.
I couldnt get the seat far enough back to have my legs/feet in a comfortable position so I'm going to retain the standard servo pedal box.
I hadn't decided exactly what I was going to do...
Cheers! I like to try and do as much as I can myself, it's the only way you really learn but there are certain things I'm not going to be foolhardy about, such as doing the welding on the cage, would take me years to get anywhere close to the standard my mate is at and welding a cage prob isnt a...
Cheers guys
Made a bit more progress yesterday, but no pictures i'm afraid.
Did a bit more work on the steering column brackets and then started work on the mounting for the indicator & wiper stalks.
Some of you may be wondering why I've opted to put Vauxhall stalks on it, well one reason is...
Home again :)
While i was away at work I decided I needed to up the ante and get some more weight out of this thing. I've already removed all the obvious bigger chunks so it's going to be hard to make any significant steps, just lots of little bits but they all add up!
So peppering non...
Going by your location we could end up competing at the same events in the same class! Go for it mate, be good to have another Clio in the class.
When I was thinking about what car to build I considered all the usual suspects, but if you scrutinise them enough they all have good and bad points...
I assume you mean the bolt snapped in the drive flange?
Did it snap tightening up or undoing?
Did you try drilling a hole through the middle of the broken bolt? Get it as central as you can about 8mm then hammer something like a Torx bit into the hole, needs to be a really tight fit so be...
I didnt think about doing that to be honest, it's doable but I'd think there would be quite a bit of work to make the linkage and get it reliable. I've driven a few Type R civics and it is nice having the gear lever up there right next to the wheel but where I've got it now feels pretty good...
Cheers,
The reason for altering the subframe/wishbone pick ups is to raise the roll centre. When you lower a car the wishbone angle changes, a little is ok as by lowering the car your dropping the centre of gravity but go too far and the roll centre drops more than the COG, the basic result is...
After staring at the steering column for too long yesterday trying to figure out where to start, I decided to go to the pub instead and make a fresh start at it today.
Hardest bit was trying to position/visualise something in mid air, so zip tied some box section in and started playing around...
Well, camera took more than 10 today but not by much lol
Got the passenger seat rails progressed, starting to get a bit better with the mig, will leave the bit onto the tube for my mate to TIG
Then set about moving the gear lever back a bit, first up was to trim away what I could and see how...
Think it's time to get a new battery for my camera, can barely get 10 pics from it on a full charge.
Drivers seat tubes and brackers are now finished and fully welded, today I started on the passenger side, got the tubes cut and tacked into place, tomorrow i'll hopefully get the brackets tacked...
Yeah, bonnet has been attacked, not sure how much weight came out of it, the inner skin is pretty thin tbh, so dont imagine it's a huge saving but every little helps. Just going to use two bonnet pins and retain the hinges.
Had a stupid course to do for work Monday to Wednesday so thats messed up most of this week :dapprove:
Anyway, got back to the shed about 2pm today and carried on where I left off last week, got the seat rails finished off and tacked in, made from 40mm T45 tube, bit overkill but I had it left...
Having removed them and felt how flimsey they are, I personally dont think they would have any effect on shell stiffness but if you've been told otherwise you can only go on what you think and or have been advised.
