It's all lost on me. The 182 I had before and the 172 cup now with a B+M quickshift both shift fine on standard dog bones. But then I ain't fussy. I don't mind the steering wheel, driving position or anything else to be honest. I just get in, drive to the track and use whatever the car and the...
The lower gearbox mount. It looks like a dog bone. The standard ones are quite soft so if you like to ram your car through the gears film style or are competing it's not up to the job. I've not had a problem myself but then I don't care about those couple of tenths I lose changing smoothly and...
It's a normally aspirated 2.0. It's never gonna feel strong out of it's power band now manufacturers have got turbos sussed and we're all spoilt with torque everywhere.
Lol at the anti winter tyre brigade. As I said I don't fit track day tyres when I go to tracks as I can get my car round well enough on road tyres but I would have more grip if I did buy track day tyres. No-one said you must have winter tyres in the winter in Scotland but that they would be...
I was waiting for this. The Rainsports are a hit with some but I will always be raiding my wallet for the more expensive tires unless my wallet has nothing to raid. Good but not as good wet or dry on road or track.
I know the Fuchs silkolene pro S 5w-40 is quite happy in the 120's as that's where it was on the oil temp gauge all day when I tracked my 206 HDI. It's being changed now 6000miles later and all is fine. Actually quieter than the semi synthetic I ran before when the car didn't have a re-map at...
98 recommended. The engine has a knock sensor so will run 95 and adjust itself as required. Isn't super unleaded 98 in France instead of 97 over here. Hence the 98 recommendation on the fuel flap. I really want to do this but as my car apart from the occasional hairpin spends its time...
Nor do most people but winter tyres work better in winter conditions due to their compounds being created specifically for low temperatures. So if you can afford them then why tip toe around in the winter when you could adopt a more normal driving style. Some summer tyres are out of their depth...
They only go when you rev them! These cars just make noises. Lots of noises! Cheap, tinny little cars that are there to bring a smile to your face. I've given up chasing noises in mine.
I thought the P-zero neros were alright. Did a castle combe day on them and they faired well. The michelins are just better. Well in terms of speeds at the end of straights, confidence under braking and general feel anyway. 205/45/16 premium tyres do have a noticeable amount more grip than...
The PS3's are very good. I've run them on dry and wet track days on a 182 and couldn't fault them. Complemented the cars chassis perfectly. If you don't go nuts you can get plenty of road miles out of them in between track days.
I've always been impressed with uniroyals tyres but I would stump...
It's simple, you must be able to stop in the distance you have in front of you. It doesn't matter what the car in front is doing. You have to be prepared for that. It's called driving.
Keep left arrows, then a solid white line on marks side, a blind brow, then solid white lines on both sides...
It's quite an eye opener how much difference a refresh on any car makes. I personally prefer standard. Everything on the Clios is also very well matched. If you upgrade one bit then something else will suffer. Track tyres are the usual culprit for causing a brake and suspension upgrade.
I...
They aren't bad at all once on the boil it's just that things have moved on a decade later and so many cars now have point and squirt levels to match or beat a sport that hasn't changed down. It's weird I've never given those a second thought. I just get in and get on with it. But then I've...
It's a Laguna engine with a few tweaks. Provide you don't take the mick with the revs if you take away the limiter and service it properly it's not that stressed really.
It's not uncommon to find modern engines in scrap yards with well over 6 figures and little if any bore wear.
The Clio's...
Cars are getting on now and how they are used is so variable. If you can afford it get it done. Peace of mind is worth a lot. Mine had the works just before I got it which is why I have no issue using it as was intended.
Depends on the track days. Airfield days if your a peasant like me and you'll be glad of the softer suspension. Nice smooth race tracks and you'll be missing a good set of coilovers. As for the weight I drive my cup two up. I weigh the same as Renaults claimed weight loss for the cup so it's...
I agree. Even when my mounts were shot it was only heavy use of the throttle when changing gear and deliberately enducing it by stamping on and off the throttle in the higher gears that I got any knocks.
My standard mounts are spot on for normal driving.
Have you seen what they put the V6 through in testing? Video is on YouTube somewhere. I think they'll last well if serviced properly. Standing up to neglect and abuse only time will tell
Short journeys will remain engines nemesis for a long time to come I'm sure.
Car magazine times can be useful. 60-100 is very comparable for track use. I think if I had an ST and it lost in a 3rd gear pull to a cup I'd take it back. I got done by a re-mapped Ibiza tri off a mini roundabout a little while ago and I was in 2nd but doing about 20mph and he was gone in a...
We'll agree to disagree as to the odd comparison. I don't think it's a case of hot hatch vs hot hatch anymore. The new stuff is just so capable. Not the your car has had to loose something to gain something scenario of old. I used to compete in a class that would allow a 1.8t car of any age to...
What an odd thread. The cars are so different really. A very unadvanced N/A versus current turbo tech, a current very rigid chassis against a 4 star Ncap car, a good chunk of difference in weight and so on. Things have just moved on. I'm sure in the right circumstances a cup could remind an ST...
Non genuine won't be s**t if they are OE quality. I have a non Renault top gearbox mount. The mounts aren't s**t. Renault or not. The Renault ones seem to be better finished wether the rubber is significantly better only time will tell I have had zero trouble with mine. The genuine ones aren't...
