That's not quite correct Kev (on the burned onto the surface part). The idea behind it is that the surface of the wax is "non-stick" and that part is true. It will help dirt and water to slide of as PTFE is very VERY unreactive (don't ask why, unless you want to bored shitless).

I sanded mine, wet sanded down the grades and managed a perfectly smooth finish. Then primered, wet sanded, painted, lacquered. If you take your time, there is no reason not to DIY it.
Make sure the paint is the right colour. Halfords may not be the best option here, as said above, but I think...

They don't pass the "CD Test" Sash. In that when rubbed on a clean, new CD, they marr the surface. Therefore, they could scratch the paint surface on the car.
