Cheers bud, sadly the gearbox internals aren't so lovely! it was delivery on the back of a AA truck so its proper dead.

Bit like a black vee running around with green 'P' plates on it.

The diff has packed up on my 172. What would be the best course of action; a striaght replacement diff or complete gearbox change?

a solution (hopefully)! 5TH Gear lock nut is common for coming loose. Solution: remove the end case, easy but messy as it drops gear oil.... put car in gear with someones foot hard on the brake and check its tightness as per haynes manual.... you'll see score marks on the end case if...

I've got a strange noise coming from the engine/gearbox whenever 5th gear is engaged. The noise isn't there in any other gear or whenever i'm off the throttle in 5th. The noise sounds like a metalic ticking/vibration. There is no loss of performance in 5th and the car runs perfectly in every...

My '02 172 is on 70.5k and the odd bit goes wrong (brake master switch last week, £12 to fix) but overall its spot on. Its also done 25k with uprated cams and other engine toys and thats proved no bother either.

Why charge £1200 for a colour? Simple answer is there is limited demand for the colour and the cost of changing over the lines in the factory to accomadiate a limited run of colour is refected in the price. Manufacturing costs etc.
