Cheers for information, the regs are certainly difficult to interpret at times. Funny isn't it as the roll centre mods help to align the suspension geometry back to standard in a way but can be deemed as illegal. Ah well onwards and upwards.
I know its a nightmare to interpret the regs and opinions can differ, with the MSA being the ultimate arbiter, but looking specifically at the regs in relation to rose joints (spherical bearings) the regs would appear to say that you cannot replace "bushes" with spherical type bearings (only...
Go for the Gripper and alter the final drive ratio, this alone will lower times if you learn to drive it to get best out of diff. ARB would be way down the list. Best permitted tyres you can afford. Uprated lowered springs will assist unless you can run to a decent set of coilers for front...
Chasing marginal gains which won't assist a turbo upgrade is an easy way to drain your bank balance for no return in the long run. As stated above lightening the car is a good "free" way to deliver more power.
Just sit tight until you can go for the turbo upgrade, good cost effective "bang...
Agreed about oil sloshing about and given that hot oil is so “thin” seems to me that baffling the sump is a reasonable modification to make. The engine in question had a new genuine Renault oil pump fitted so a strip and check sounds in order and I will also make the oprv mods as suggested - all...
Thanks for the info. I will investigate and carry out the mods you suggest. Hope you don’t mind if I get back to you if I need a bit of further guidance when undertaking the mods. Cheers Colin
Just in the process of rebuilding 172 motor ( comp car) which has suffered from oil starvation. Looking to tick oil surge off the list as a possible cause so want to baffle the sump to prevent possible damage in the future. Don’t see anything inherent in the Clio sump design which would make it...
Hi,
Does anyone have any details of a sump baffle plate for the 172 motor - before I go reinventing the wheel.
I have searched previous posts but unfortunately can't seem to find any details.
Cheers

It's for comp car BTW.

Safe to say a "foreign" object of some description has found its way into the cylinder.
Did the failure appear out of nowhere or had you recently carried out any work on the engine?
For track day use would leave the engine alone in the first instance and sort out tyres and suspension. You need to be able to put down any additional power to make it worthwhile so that's where I would go first.
Track day use engine wise leave block /head alone as if something blows £300 ish...
The Clio 172 head is a pretty decent bit of kit in standard form with good flow characteristics. Not talking about an 850 cc A series Mini head here, after all it's a dohc 4 valves per cylinder head which helps the Clio deliver such good power output as std. Marginal gains when just doing...
Building a "real" race engine is greatly different from building an engine to deliver a few more bhp. It is far more than just bolting together a set of component parts. If you can undo nuts and bolts you may have the skill set to build an engine however you do need a real understanding of...
This is true, polished ports, although pleasing to the eye, do very little to improve gas flow through the ports, as a slightly rougher surface can help reduce drag and also can help improve the air fuel mix. The trick in head work is to modify the ports to improve gas flow / speed through the...
The 172 head is reasonably ok as standard, a ported and flowed head will just work better. On its own as a stand alone mod you will probably not really notice the difference when driving, however, as part of an upgrade package coupled with other modifications then its about aggregate gains...
Just in the process of stripping my lads 172 Cup which he used successfully for sprints / hillclimbs. Ran a ported /modified head with Supertech valves / dephaser delete Cams and also fitted with a gripper, which was fitted new and only used for one season so very little use, same for head so I...
Although Paul didnt win the event his driving style was the most spectacular and always received the loudest applause.
Excellent exhibition of tight driving control skills.
From what I can gather looks like there is a business opportunity here.
Just email me your mods and I will forward at nominal cost a dyno output to reach whatever power level you want it to show. This would be in line with, and just as accurate, as what some dyno outputs appear to do anyway and...
The fitting of aftermarket exhaust modifications, especially ones which increase the level of sound emitted, can contravene the Type Approval of the vehicle, which in itself is an offence. There is no requirement for Police to measure the sound level emitted, only offer an opinion that it is...
