Looks like there are 3 oilway "orifices"in sides of head casting where vvt solenoid fits. OK to fit insert blank which seals all 3 off?

Safe to say a "foreign" object of some description has found its way into the cylinder. Did the failure appear out of nowhere or had you recently carried out any work on the engine?

For track day use would leave the engine alone in the first instance and sort out tyres and suspension. You need to be able to put down any additional power to make it worthwhile so that's where I would go first. Track day use engine wise leave block /head alone as if something blows £300 ish...

The 172 head is reasonably ok as standard, a ported and flowed head will just work better. On its own as a stand alone mod you will probably not really notice the difference when driving, however, as part of an upgrade package coupled with other modifications then its about aggregate gains...
