In my experience never a good idea to lubricate the input shaft splines, just be cleaned off and and left dry. Lots of dust about in the bellhousing from the clutch plate as it wears down and as such if the shaft is lubricated it can then stick to the splines on the shaft and over time...
In general clutches either slip or they don't so the intermittent slipping with yours is somewhat strange and this is the issue which needs addressing, as if you just have a new clutch fitted and the underlying cause is say an oil leak from the rear crank seal then without sorting this it will...
Easiest way to test for a slipping clutch is from a standstill stick the car in a high gear, 5th say and try to move off giving it plenty of revs. It will just stall if the clutch is ok and if not the car will move off clutch slipping like mad.

What championship are you running in?
Regards Russ............
Looking to run the car in the Longton & District and Liverpool MC championships. I am just the spannerman / watcher it's my lad who will be the most important bit - " the nut holding the wheel".
Do you rate the gripper as a...
Car will run in 1B, fully road legal, but not looking to drive it to events at this stage- so not really concerned about road manners. The 422/423 cams appear on paper to fit the bill but didn't want to be too greedy at the expense of good low / mid range performance. The stock 172 is certainly...
Just building up a Ph2 172 engine for sprint / hillclimb use only and my query is regarding cam choice. Whilst I appreciate that max bhp figures are nice, they are not in themselves the be all and end all, so looking for a cam which does not lose out on the low down torque side of things, plus...
Hi,
Anyone got a 172 Cup ph2 inlet manifold gasket to hand, I am looking for the cross sectional area of the inlet port, anyone know offhand or just measure the dimensions for me and I will calculate.
Cheers and Merry Xmas,
Colin
Sorry was not my intention to be anal, just trying to help ensure that the information given out is correct. My last couple of cars have been CAT C write offs which I have repaired and used as my daily drivers, so relevant in a way.
Not true, you can drive a car to be Vehicle Identity Checked (a repaired CAT C write off for example) to and from a VOSA inspection centre without it being taxed (it has to have an appointment).
Need to get a bar in between to check, not always obvious by hand even when jacked up due to load from suspension.
You need to jack wheels up off ground individually, ball joint play won't show if car on ramps due to weight of car still being on ball joint
Does anyone know when the CatCams 423 cam is used with Wossner high comp pistons, do the piston valve cut outs require deepening and more importantly is their enough meat on the crown to accomodate.
I will of course do a dry build first to assess any clearance issues but just wondering if...
In my research into this it is apparently not the scrutineers who pick it up in the first place, as they are not encyclopaedic on all makes and variants of cars - they are generally looking at the "race safety" of the vehicle in the first instance , it is fellow competitiors who lodge complaints...
Looking to move up sprint class next year from SB to 1b, where you can fit throttle bodies. You are not allowed to modify the slam panel I am advised in fitting them. As they are an expensive piece of kit my question is what throttle bodies will fit without having to modify any under bonnet...
Cheers, under MSA Sprint Regs you can run 1 inch wider rims in roadgoing class ( you can't alter the bodywork to suit) so was considering this as an option.
Again depends why you are fitting new rings. If it is just to "freshen up" an already good engine then with honing they should be ok, however, if it was drinking oil due to excessive bore wear or low compressions then that's another story.
You would need to check with an internal micrometer...
An optical illusion, just fitted some only last week and I was of the same mind at first, though these will never fit. When examined though they fitted fine. From memory I did have to bend the small tab on one washer sightly so as it was more at right angles to the washer itself. Then went in...
They appear at first glance not to fit but with a bit of"wiggling" will go in. You need to fit washer to bolt and then slide assembly in. The tab on the washer then locates as as the bolt next to the head is a smaller diameter than the hloe in strut if that makes sense.
Cheers for the response pics confirm what I had assumed.
There are a number of "182" manifolds currently on sale which are therefore just 172 ones.
Colin
Hi,
I have been looking at the claimed increases in bhp from “ matching inlets” on a Clio Cup 172 of some 10bhp.
Looking at the “minor” mismatch between gasket and inlet manifold this seems a large increase in power for such a small port blending exercise.
Is this 10bhp increase just...
Hi Newbie here first post question.
I understand that a 182 exhaust is supposed to be a 4-2-1 manifold while the 172 is a 4-1.
My query is I have been looking at "genuine taken off a 182" manifolds which appear to be exactly the same to look at as ones advertised as from a 172.
Does the...
