If you buy it SIM free then it'll be fully unlocked so you can put any network SIM in it and it'll work straight away.

Yea its not bad, its quite like bbm and you can chat with folk that have BB's or Android as well as iPhones.

I disagree TBH. I had to get my 3GS replaced 5 times due to various faults. I haven't had to replace my 4 at all. The processor alone is more than enough reason to change from a 3GS, let alone the camera, screen etc.
