The D90 is a great step up, I went from the D40 To the D80 and now I've just got a D300s, so yes I would say the D90 is your next step.
Just do it you'll love it.
The toxic gas warning light keeps coming on on my 172, if I give the car good run on the motorway (at speed) it goes out for a few weeks but then comes back on.

I had a TZ5 then got offered a TZ7 cheap so I sold the TZ5 hoping the TZ7 would have better noise levels but it still as bad!!!
So your answer is yes the noise is very bad on low light shots.

I have an SLR zoom, it was a pain in the back side to screw on and of the camera so now I have a Manfrotto 484RC2 Mini Ball Head sat on top of it this make life much easier.
