The 1.8 is sharper than the 1.4 at f2 and slower iirc I'm not to sure about you're camera, but if it has only one cross type AF sensor in the centre, I'd stick to that one exclusively with that lens, and personally wouldn't bother with the 1.4, it's the old USM motor anyway so isn't that much...

It's not just the camera you're buying though is it, you're also buying into a family of lenses and accessories, I can't shoot anything other than Canon or Nikon simply because of the huge amount of lens options, You need to look into the future when you first start out, if its simply for snaps...
