Cambelt idler breaking up is neglect, so IMO insurers won't cover that. Otherwise we could all drive round without changing the oil then when it throws a rod out the block claim for it.
Tbh if they've said the gasket has gone I'm certainly not trusting their diagnosis any further. Common places for leaks are the radiator, water pump, thermostat housing.

No need to remove the strut and hub. You'll need to completely lower the subframe. Leave starter and rack, just disconnect the pinch bolt on the column or leave the rack on the car.
Equal length shafts is an option, but it's quite a bit of work as no VW has equal length shafts as standard. I have an idea in the making which will eliminate all torque steer.
