Think you will find the mk1 is quicker, Mine is the same performance as my old cup, which was def. faster than the mk2 172. Also the mk1 cruises at 85mph at 4k rpm, the cup and mk2 172 cruises at 75 at 4k rpm (ish)

Mine has a small red LED next to the gear nob matey so must be. There is also a fuse for the immobiliser so you could try removing that too. How many times does it flash when you lock it (the indicators)

get out and lock the car - Then bang the key about a bit - Then unlock it and try again - May be the immobiliser

MK2 bump strips have a nice badge and the come on the mk1 rear lights are just dull matt red! Think most people are talking about the front mate. The mk2 has a completely different grill and it doesnt have the aggressive front bumper!!
