it aint illegal to have a decat as long as the car can pass the emmisions test, on the 172 it gives good gains. mine passed the MOT recently with 5 litres of cool blue and a dose of fuel system cleaner in the tank.
My mate is a tester and we tested the emmisions before with bog standard petrol...
its cos the frenchys go off the emissions as fred said the 1.2 is aka 1.2litres of fuel per 10km in an ideal situation ie 70mph round a ring test track
very similar engine bore is larger and stroke longer and crank different the 1.4 and 1.6 have only 12bhp to sepperate them so i doubt you would notice much difference
mine runs smoother with optimax and it also does a higher mpg, but my ecu is tuned for 97/98 ron, the standard 172 is mapped to run on 95 ron (uk model) and the ecu wont advance the ignition timing when putting 98 in the engine so standard 172 owners wont 'feel' the difference really
if you bought the parts second hand it wouldnt cost too much but the labor and wiring headaches would be a nightmare, i have a 'cup' engine'd car with abs but the abs was already in my car all i had to do was splice the loom so i run an independant abs loom.

its easy
undo the plug leads
undo the two sensors either side of the manifold
undo the throttle possision sensor
undo the 2 10mm bolts at the back near the coil pack

flux and greenlight are ok about transplants esp if its from the same type of car
my insurance is cheaper than a 172 as its not a 'desirable' it doesnt look like a 172 and nobody knows it is, its still got drums on the back!
plus no body kit and no big ice i pay £559 a year compared to...
as its not injection chances are it wont work without some kind of sender unit, if its not injection is it the 1.1 model you have? didnt know they did a carb 1.2 RL
