Er yes, thats what I do. A proper synthetic 5w-40 like Motul 300V 5w-40 or Silkolene PRO S 5w-40. http://www.opieoils.co.uk/TechSpecs/PRO%20S%20-%204%20Wheel.pdfhttp://www.opieoils.co.uk/TechSpecs/PRO%20S%20-%204%20Wheel.pdf...

Modded your car or doing trackdays

If you are "modding" your car and adding BHP or using your car for track days then consider your oil choice carefully as the stock manufacturers recommended oil will not give you the protection that your engine requires. A standard oil will not be thermally stable enough to cope with higher...

    Oil for the 182 - a source

Do you really think its possible to formulate a decent oil at these prices? The answer is NO, you get what you pay for. Think how many people there are in the chain, the oil refinery, the additive suppliers, the wholesalers ane the retailers. The base cost of this oil is next to nothing and...

    182 oil-ordered

I would say based on price its Group III. The HTHS number would confirm this if we could get hold of it. Cheers Simon

    182 oil-ordered

If you are talking quality and performance the following order should be observed: Best = Fully synthetic (Group IV PAO and Group V Esters) Second best = Fully/Semi-synthetic (Group III hydrocracked oils) Third = Mineral oils (Group II mineral basestocks) This should explain: Basestock...

    182 oil-ordered

Ok, there are different types of basestocks that can be called synthetics although some are just actually highly refined mineral oils which are called hydrocracked (group III) but true synthetics are not petroleum based, they are made in laboratories by chemists and unlike petroleum basestocks...

    182 oil-ordered

Not meaning to sound funny or controversial but does anyone know how good this oil is? Looking at the price (even for a larger amount) is would appear to be Group III (hydrocracked) basestocks and not a Group IV or V (pao/ester) proper synthetic. Just playing devils advocate, its your car...

    V6 which OIL

Stu, You missed the point mate Im afraid. A synthetic 10w-40 is the same viscosity (thickness) as a mineral or semi-synthetic 10w-40, its just a better oil. Do not confuse "basestocks" used i.e. synthetic or petroleum with the thickness of the oil, this is called viscosity. Have a read...

    V6 which OIL

Its one of three proper synthetics used as oils (these are not petroleum refined or derived) and are far superior to petroleum based lubricants. They are PAO (Poly alpha olefins), diesters and polyolesters. Cheap oils (under £5.00 per litre) labelled as synthetic are usually "hydrocracked"...

    V6 which OIL

Check first that its not a PAO blend as we could be comparing apples and pears here. I would doubt its 100% PAO as its way too cheap. Just make sure before you buy as Id say it contains a percentage of PAO (up to 20%) and not like the Silkolene which is 100% PAO/Ester blend. If they wont...

    V6 which OIL

Correct its ACEA A3 5w-40. I have 3, Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 (Ester/PAO), Total Quartz 9000 5w-40 (PAO) and Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40 (PAO) These are all very good oils. Cheers Simon

    V6 which OIL

You need a good 5w-40, there are many out there but quality varies (basestocks wise) so look for a true synthetic one would be my advice. The likes of Total, Silkolene, Fuchs, Mobil make decent synthetic ones as opposed to "hydrocracked" ones. This article goes some way to explaining why a...

    OIL in 172!!!

0w-40 is unecessary as to pass 0w it needs to pour at -35 degC. 5w-40 has to pour at -30 degC. It will work fine but always best to stick to manufacturers recommendations so I would try to use 5w-40 if possible. Cheers Simon

    OIL in 172!!!

Just a small point here. "Synthetic oil is too thin" is a myth. Its the viscosity that determines the thickness of an oil, not the type. The type determines its lubricating qualities. From worst to best Mineral Oils Hydrockacked/Modified mineral Oils True Synthetics By the way the...
