V6 which OIL

Im just wondering what type of engine oil everybody uses or would recomend for the Vee.

At one of the services the car has had..............at SMC Reno in Woking they actually used Mobile 1, Ive not heard of a main dealer using that before......................although it is one of the best and its the one I was going to opt for.

I was given a bottle of this when I picked mine up. ^^^^^^

As well as coolant and diamond bright.
 


You need a good 5w-40, there are many out there but quality varies (basestocks wise) so look for a true synthetic one would be my advice.

The likes of Total, Silkolene, Fuchs, Mobil make decent synthetic ones as opposed to "hydrocracked" ones.

This article goes some way to explaining why a synthetic is not always a synthetic so its a case of knowing what you are buying before you do so!

A word of caution – You get what you pay for!



Below is an article written by John Rowland, Silkolene/Fuchs Chief R & D Chemist for 40 years.

Costs of synthetics vary considerably.

The most expensive are the “Ester” types originally only used in jet engines. These cost 6 to 10 times more than high quality mineral oils.

The cheapest synthetics are not really synthetic at all, from a chemists point of view. These are in fact specially refined light viscosity mineral oils known as “hydrocracked”. These have some advantages over equivalent mineral oils, particularly in lower viscosity motor oils such as 5w-30 or other oils with a low “W” rating such as 5w-50 etc and they cost about 1.5 times more than good quality mineral fractions.

We use several different grades of this base oil, where appropriate. This is the “synthetic” which is always used in cheap oils that are labelled “synthetic”. Yes it’s a cruel world, you get what you pay for!

Now, you may ask, why are these special mineral oils called “synthetic”?

Well, it was all sorted in a legal battle that took place in the USA about ten years ago. Sound reasons (including evidence from a Nobel Prize winning chemist) were disregarded and the final ruling was that certain mineral bases that had undergone extra chemical treatments could be called “synthetic”.

Needless to say, the marketing executives wet their knickers with pure delight! They realised that this meant, and still does, that the critical buzz-word “synthetic” could be printed on a can of cheap oil provided that the contents included a few percent of “hydrocracked” mineral oil, at a cost of quite literally a few pence.

So, the chemistry of “synthetics” is complex and so is the politics!

The economics are very simple. If you like the look of a smart well-marketed can with “synthetic” printed on it, fair enough, it will not cost you a lot; and now you know why this is the case. But, if you drive a high performance car, and you intend to keep it for several years, and maybe do the odd “track day”, then you need a genuine Ester/PAO (Poly Alpha Olefin) synthetic oil.

This oil costs more money to buy, because it costs us a lot of money to make, very simply, you always get what you pay for!

Thanks everybody..................and Simon..................is it then just the cost that indicates weather an oil is FULLY SYNTHETIC.....................or is there another means by which I can tell and which oil would both yourself and the author of the above use in a V6?

reno say ELF 5w40 fully synth, (avail at reno) but IMO any good brand 5w40 fully synth is ok for the V6.



at my last service i was told they used 5w40 fully synth, but my invoice said 10w40 comp 4.

they insist they used the 5w40 but it wasnt listed on their system so they chose the other one for the paperwork. im not convinced so ill order some top ester based oil from simon at OPIE (oilman) and use that.
 


stusV6, I know ive brought it up quite a few times but a place in Castleford can get you the correct Elf oil for RS engines at a very, very cheap price.

Ive posted contact details before. This way you are putting in 100% what the book says.

Its a good rule of thumb as proper synthetics are expensive base stocks because theyre better.

You cant even produce a good synthetic for the sort of money "hydrocracked" oils are sold at.

There are some decent ones about though, Silkolene PRO, Fuchs Supersyn, Mobil 1, Motul 300v, Redline, Royal Purple etc although some are silly prices. You dont need to pay £10 per litre though.

Liam..............I have just called the place in Castleford and they say that they only do 45 gallon drums thats 208 litres:o

Although I didnt manage to talk to Debra..........would that make a difference?

Stu, ring back and ask to talk to Debra, tell her its the stuff she supplied Liam with, they can get it, me and hip+spasm have both got it.
 


Just saw your reply Liam...................will do first thing in the morning.

Although Im in 2 minds now...................I spoke to Simon (or my dad did) and he rcomends Silkolene Pro S....................I think its just going to come down to price in the end.

Right... now Im concerned as well.. I thought after reading about the mess ups Renault have made with servicing peoples cars. Id check my invoice for my 12k mile service that was in July!

The oil is listed as: EVO 5W/40 SXR (not sure what the SXR?)

But this is the concerning bit..... also listed is: DIESEL TREATMENT !!!

What the hell is this Diesel Treatment???? Ill be calling them first thing tomorrow, but can anyone give me any ideas what they are using this treatment in my V6 for?

This will teach me for just paying and leaving without checking the invoice. If I was having it serviced by Bullsh*t Car Breakers & Co Id be well prepared for a crap service, but these are the main dealers! Do they actually teach them anything at Renault before handing them a set of spanners?

Ideas on this please?

(doesnt Mobil 1 offer ZERO protection to a cold engine? Isnt this when the mosts damage is done?)
 


V6ing.....................the renault dealers used Mobile 1 on my car............BUT yesterday before putting the post up I had contacted Renault and asked them, the response is as follows QUOTE: -

"I have checked with the service department at Renault London West and they recommend, semi synthetic Renault Premium Elf 10/40 for use with the Clio V6"

Is this a spanner in the works or what....................or does any Renault dealer know what should be used.

My local dealer says Elf Excellium LDX.

they havent a clue! i had to show then how to reseat a CV gaitor myself!

im going for the silkolene oil from oilman too. ester based oils are the best, and the cost of the silko is so competitive its unreal.

my receipt has petrol treatment listed on it from my 12 k service.

maybe they chose the wrong one on the computer?

Stu.. ur not kidding mate! What a load of space monkeys! I mean, RenaultSport division have some balls to design and build some stunning cars that other manufacturers would run away scared from at the thought of!

But the monkeys that service them (and the dealership managers!) know dam all about the running of these cars, asking them for advice is a waste of time. Maybe I shouldnt be blaming the guys with the tools! Renault SHOULD be training them! Not just ONE guy at each dealership about the correct procedures and parts required! Rather than just fobbing us off.

You really would expect them to know what type of Oil to use!! This is silly! In future, Ill supply them with the right oil myself. Think its wise for anyone else to do the same.

The Instruction as Issued by Renault UK a few weeks ago is that

ALL RS Vehicles must be filled with 5W40 Oil.. FULL STOP..

If any dealer is not doing this or doesnt know then you need to complain to Customer services..

It was included on a Tech Note Listing issued to ALL UK dealers.... Ill will post a partiall copy of it tommorrow..
 


Ah well V6ing................................tell me then whats the rite oil............cause I sure dont know:D

172Exclusive.................it was customer services that told me TODAY that it should be Renault Premium Elf 10/40:o

Although all they appear to have done is ring a dealer in London and ask them eh:confused:

OK I have just sent an email to Renault Customer Services asking them to clarify the oil situation once and for all.

I mentioned the note that was sent out to all dealerships and explained that there is a world of difference between Semi Synthetic oil, as recommended by them today, and Fully Synthetic oil.

Will let you know their response tomorow.

5W40 Fully Synthetic is the correct type, the best brand would be your own choice.. mine doesnt really use any oil up between services, so its another year away yet for the next service, so the exact choice of brand will be made nearer the time.
 


Yeah V6ing thats my thoughts too either the Silkolene Pro S from Oilman or the Elf Excellium LDX.

My car has been serviced every 12months so thats due again in May....................Im just going to go with that cause thats whats been done as I say from New.

im panning on doing my own interim oil and filter change halfway between services.

i have no confidence in renault, infact all main dealers are w4nk, my colleague gets the same from VW with his R32.

i wouldnt even trust them to put my supplied oil in the car. i can see that ill be doing my own servicing and work in future. you wont void your warranty if its done at a VAT regd garage (mine) and using genuine OE parts.
 


The drivers handbook recommends Elf Excellum 5W40 tried to buy some and could not find an outlet near to where I live.

If you lookmon page 4.08 this gives a list according to thr outside temperatue 5W40 suitable for -30 degrees C all the way up to +30 degrees C. So this more than covers the temperatures in EU countries.

In the end located a garage that sold Total Quartz 9000 5W40, bought this and the garage I use put this in.

All I can say you have to trust some one, if you cannot trust them on this you should not take the car into them.
 


Correct its ACEA A3 5w-40.

I have 3, Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 (Ester/PAO), Total Quartz 9000 5w-40 (PAO) and Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40 (PAO) These are all very good oils.

im planning on going for the PRO S from yourself. is this what you would advise being an ester oil?

im not worried about price really, aslong as its good stuff.

agreed John, use what the handbook says not what a renault dealership tells you.

I couldnt find any either until I phoned Debra at the castleford depot, she posted some out to me free of charge for the postage cos I was local and altogether it cost me £101 for 48litres of Elf Excellium LDX 5W40.

its in my house now.

I agree and confirm that Renault recommend ACEA (Association of European Automobile Manufacturers) A3 5W40 fully synthetic, grade oil for use with the V6 RenaultSport 3.0 litre engine. However this recommendation is primarily targeted for those countries where climatic conditions cause temperatures to drop to -25 degrees Centigrade. Having spoken with the Service department at Renault London West, they feel that the semi-synthetic oil they use is also suitable.
