If you turn the auto wipers off, then intermitant is adjustable should work fine and the speed can be adjusted using the sensitivity ring I think. I could be wrong but I'm sure someone can confirm if this is true or not.

Maybe post up the mileages but more than likely clocks were changed before the last MOT was issued if was only 1000 less miles in 2008. Have you got the name and address of the previous owner on your V5 green slip? Maybe find his number/visit if local and ask him if he knows about the clocks etc?

That's a normal phase 2 172. In Monaco Blue. Auto wipers and lights are probably just switched off then. My other post explains how to turn them back on and will say in the manual.
