Just a quick update.. the engine is in and the car is now on the ground!
I also got the first bit of bodywork back yesterday..
I don't think that pic does it justice at all.. the contrast of blue and black looks unbelievable in person
That's all being worked out but yeah I'll be looking after it and doing race / event support. The idea is to make more of them so this is the demo car, but it's also entering some endurance races with 750MC and others.
Ah, I was trying not to promote it too much as I didn't know whether that was allowed! My company is SaloonLibre and it's fabrication of pretty much any sort but mostly cages and arty things like exhausts and suspension bits. This is by far the biggest job I've had since setting up!
Yep...
Hello again!
I've been doing a lot of fiddly work the past couple of weeks that doesn't really make for very interesting updates, hence the lack of them! This has mostly been welding up all the firewall / footwell bits, finishing wiring harnesses, and getting all the wires / plumbing organised...
Looking at this pic I'd say that your tyre wear problem is entirely down to soft suspension and too much body roll.
Sorry I can't recommend a cheap fix but I think you're going to end up chasing your tail if you try anything other than stiffer springs & dampers. Maybe a rear ARB will be your...
Yes that's absolutely what's happening.. your chassis is basically a big spring linking the front and rear axles together, so if you change the stiffness of that spring (i.e. by fitting a very stiff frame inside it) you're going to change the handling of the car.
In basic terms what's happened...
Let the build commence!
I'm giving all the aluminium panels a quick rub down with scotchbrite, 1 - to reduce glare, and 2 - because it looks awesome.
Anything that could reflect light at the driver is going to be painted satin black, so the interior is gonna look baller af.
I'm still alive!
I haven't had much time to take pics as I've had an endless stream of little jobs to sort out, but today is a big day so I'll drop this little teaser.
A couple of weeks ago the frame went off for powder coating, and I'll be picking it up this morning so the final build...
Thanks! Err.. some bits are really satisfying and others are incredibly frustrating. Tbh I wanted to burn the place down when I had to re-think the centre console / tunnel for the 3rd time!
One update as promised.. I tried to take a few more pics this time.
The Formula Renault loom has a little box full of relays, circuit breakers, and the battery isolator; but in the only places the box could fit the breakers are completely inaccessible, so they had to be relocated. I've moved...
Yeah that's what I thought too! Plus from what I've heard a wet sump would be perfectly capable in one of these, so that could make things easier / cheaper.
Forgot to mention about the vid, the starter power cable isn't connected as the engine is still dry, hence the clunk but no turning over.
OssPoop - not that easy, tbh! But there's no reason to use a Formula Renault engine in future, as a crate / rebuilt F4R will work just fine.
Got a quick video today.. the Formula Renault side of the electrics is done and working!

Sorry, embedding it won't work for...
Wow.. just looked through my phone and I haven't been taking enough pics again! :fearscream:
I'll do a quick update with what I have now, then take some better pics during the week and do a proper update next weekend.
This tunnel was a complete pain in the arse, so I was really really glad to...
Yeah loads has happened, I'll get some pics up over the weekend.. it's all small fiddly jobs at the moment so I don't have many exciting pics to show, but I'll get an update in - probably tomorrow morning.
I'll do a proper update over the weekend! :tonguewink:
Just put it on the corner weights and it's standing at 767kg dry, so should come in wet at around 840kg.
ETA: 56% Rear weight distribution, likely to be 55% wet.
Update time!
The job I've been dreading actually turned out to be pretty enjoyable, which is nice! I got off to a bit of a dodgy start as I had 10m of aluminium tube but no bends and couldn't find anyone to make me any, but was rescued by a little-known place who had a bin full of them in the...
I did want to send them down the driver's side originally, as there's a bit more space that side with the seats being shifted over, but there were a few problems with it.. the biggest being that avoiding the pedals / driver's feet was almost impossible, but even if I could there was a problem...
:fearscream:
Best update this, then!
The car is getting very close to done now, but it won't make the 25th Feb test day. I could reel off a list of reasons but it's easier to say there was just way too much to do in such little time, no room for problems, and the reality is there's 3-4 weeks...
Update 2/2
Then this week I've been working on the exhaust. You can see in this pic there's a problem with the FR manifold we're using, as the outlet is basically where the driveshaft will be in full jounce. I assume this would have cleared with the long bellhousing & oil tank, but it doesn't...
I have a bit of time this evening, so here we go!
Last week was pretty much spent making the front firewalls and dashboard. Horrendously complicated for something that really doesn't look that complicated, but there's barely any space between the pedal box and the steering rack, and the coolant...
Yeah, the frame and suspension were all designed with CAD software.
I realise I haven't updated this for a couple of weeks now.. I'm trying to get the car ready for a test session on 25th Feb, so haven't had much time to keep this updated. I'll get something up one evening this week, as it's...
I have an original T16 spoiler for the back! The front will be getting a splitter and some dive-planes, similar to the original.
There'll be kick-plates on top of the frame for the driver / passenger to rest their feet on. I should have some pics of that lot by the end of the week if it all...
Update 2/2:
The next job on the list is the floor - starting with the main section under the cockpit. I didn't want to go round grinding all the welds smooth on the underside, because it's a PITA to do and also removes some strength, so instead I used some 45mm wide strips of 3mm aluminium to...
