Woops! Sorry, I haven't done a very good job of keeping this updated!
A lot of niggly details sorted over the past few weeks, and now the driver controls are 90% finished. The big job has been mounting the bodywork, which wasn't a simple task given that the replica bodywork didn't fit very...
Evening! Sorry it's been a while since the last update, as I'll explain it's been a busy couple of weeks.
To cut a long and very frustrating story short, I was let down by the (nameless) people who I'd asked to design & CNC the bellhousing, wasting about a month of collaboration, so had no...
I should have qualified it with "relatively"..
Not a massive update, but the spoiler repair is done! Thanks to Carbon Fibre Repair in Daventry for the great work!
I really want to source some new yoghurt decals..
A quick update.. it hasn't been the best couple of days!
I took the gearbox to SWR Motorsport last week to have a shorter input shaft fitted (the FR has an integrated bellhousing & dry sump tank, so the assembly is too long for the back of a 205) and a general inspection & service, but they...
And to bring things up to date - these are from yesterday!
Anyone who's had a long-term project of any sort will know there's a point you get to where it feels like nothing is getting done - that's been the last 2 weeks or so for me! Everything has depended on everything else to progress, so...
Next job, which brings things up to about 3 weeks ago, was wishbone mounts.
I went with the option of having replaceable mounting points for the wishbones for a few reasons. Firstly, it's better to replace a cheap bracket than to chop & weld the chassis after a prang, secondly it gives options...
Thanks! Basically because it's a good strong engine, and the Formula Renault version comes with dry sump, good management, good manifolds etc so was plug & play (at least on paper).
Next job was mounting the engine..
A bit of delicate positioning & shimming to get the engine at a decent height, straight & level:
The Formula Renault engine I'm using is designed to be solid mounted to the tub as a stressed member. I won't be stressing it, but will be solid mounting to...
On to making the space frame!
First thing was to do the footplates, which also double up as gussets for the chassis crossmembers:
Then after popping the shell off & on a bunch of times, get the main hoop in position:
Then the lateral half rollbars and some longitudinal chassis rails...
This is the point where things really take off!
I got hold of a carbon-kevlar 205 T16 body from a guy in Austria, so this is going to be a sort-of replica, although really it's nothing like a T16. Since the T16 had an extended wheelbase over a standard 205 (120mm total) and I had no idea which...
So yeah as per the unfolding plans, the next job was to get the body levelled up, which I used a chassis spit to do.
Since the car uses a space-frame chassis, the original metalwork is totally superfluous from a structural perspective. In fact, the only metalwork I plan on keeping is the...
Hi all,
I figure this is the best place to post, but let me know if it needs to go somewhere else!
I'm building a space-frame 205 T16, using a few familiar parts as well as custom fabrications. The intention is for it to be used as a demo car for a potential new low cost endurance series. The...
I have a reasonably good model of 172 Cup suspension in my kinematics software and it shows kingpin offset at ground level (scrub radius) to be -5mm.
Without going into confusing detail: negative scrub is generally considered to be a good thing on road cars (especially FWD) as the way the wheel...
+1 for CL RC6 and Brembo HC discs! I've hammered several UK tracks for >30min stints and they've been 100% reliable. Also done a few Nurburgring track days and the brakes have always still been there after the long flat sections, which is nice.
I use Brembo Max grooved discs and pad life is...
Does anyone know the dimensions of the rear brake caliper mounts? I'm looking for PCD and offset to hub face in particular.
This is going to sound mental at first, but it's to figure out if it will be possible to mount a rear brake caliper on a front upright / hub carrier.
Clarification to...
Probably, but it was a rough hand calculation to give a comparison of front & rear rates. If I wanted to be super accurate I wouldn't have measured by crawling under the car with a tape measure, either. 😅
Yeah I'd expected them to be £250+ each, so I was also very surprised by the price!
They don't *have* to be new, but it's for a sort-of kit car so I would have liked to get hold of new ones. I'll just grab a couple of sets of 2nd hand ones instead. :)
PS - for anyone reading this and trying to...
As per the title, really. Does anyone know where to get new front knuckles from? I'm praying Renault still do them but am not looking forward to finding out prices! As far as I can see, GSF / ECP don't stock them.
ETA: Either 182 or 172 Cup version is fine.. I'm aware of the differences and...
I ran out of time yesterday, but as promised here's something a bit more accurate.
It was tough to measure, but the IR for the rear spring is more like 1.44 (390mm to wheel vs. 270mm to spring) so we get:
31.9 / 1.05^2 = 28.9N/mm (or 165lb/in) for the Front
56.5 / 1.44^2 = 27.2N/mm (or...
Rough estimate made from eyeballing a beam is an installation ratio of 1.25 (spring roughly 4/5ths distance of the axle to the pivot)
To find wheel rate [k(w)] from spring rate [k(s)] and installation ratio [IR], use: k(w) = k(s) / IR^2
If IR(F) is around 1.05 (about right for a McPherson...
3-year bump!
DaN/mm sucks because it looks confusing as hell, but it means "Decanewton per millimetre" so it's just 10N/mm (3.19DaN/mm * 10 = 31.9N/mm).
For anyone who wants to convert to lb/in, just multiply N/mm by 5.71 (or DaN/mm by 50.71)
31.9N/mm * 5.71 = 182lb/in for the Front
56.5N/mm...
I figured I would dig this old thread up, rather than starting a new one!
I've been trawling the site this afternoon, but there seems to be a massive amount of conflicting info about all the different wheel bearing / hub / hub carrier options and the differences between them. I'm hoping someone...
