Red16 - i do remember when topping up the oil, that i have spilt a bit on a few occasions....could be it - need to check TWknd... - the only smoke that comes out on start up is normal smoke - not blue or...
Didnt have the engine rebuilt at 70K! - just the timing belt changed - wanted to know if i NEEDED an engine rebuild......cos of the oil leakage....or if it just needs a head gasket of something...
I paid £54 for a new cable fitting but that included a new lock barrel fitting - bought cable from reno - bout £13.00 - just labour cost i paid 4 at the garage - reckon bout £40 at a decent garage if they do replace it?...
Just had a new clutch cable fitted, and it is stiff, and a sharp biting point - the old cable wanst routed properly and snapped...u checked nothing is snagging the cable? Mine felt a bit vague when the cable was on its way out and had probs going into gear...
Mine does the same! got just under 88k on mine - bout it at 60K - dont know if a new clutch was fitted b4 i got it....but yeah, nasty grinding noises when reverse engaged sometimes! - dosent do it as much if i put in 1st before, or engage reverse slowwwwwwwwwwwly......but u shouldnt have to do...

My 16V has just under 88k on the clock - had a timing belt change at 70k and seems ok.
I cahecked the spark plugs the other week and noticed in two of the chambers, oil was leaking in and one of the plugs was covered at both ends in black oil.
Looked in the haynes manual and this said that...
I fitted it last spring, but kept the original induction pipe on the car untill this summer, when i modified it and add a new, bigger pipe that goes from the grille, right up to the filter.
I dont remember noticing any big power gains when i fitted it originally, or when i modified the pipe...
Ive got a K&N on my 16v, with a homemade induction kit - original one was pants.
Mine hasnt melted, yet....dont notice any real power gains, but it sounds evil enough...

Id take it to a reputable auto-electricial place and get them to do a check on it for you - have a look for one in your local autotrader, or if you know someone that has been to one, ask what they think..

The same happened on mine about this time last year - the battery light was on all the time eevn when driving. Got a new one fitted at a garage that specialise in auto - electrical and sports cars.
Think alternators are an exchange unit only, and involves taking off the bonnet, wing, headlight...
