Check the EGR vavle is nice and clean then stick some cleaner though the engine he is leaving the lights to go out when he starts it ins't he.
Next on the list if its very early on driving woul be the threomplugs and fuses to be checked.
Do you have mayonaise like stuf under the filler cap? Its very unlikly to be head gasget there very strong realy.
Most likly as said the coolent temp sensot has failed or the wires are sligtly stretch/earthing.
Unless he fiddled with the mapping or unpluged the sensor there not much else can be done.
In theory unplug the second sensor tape the wires up and it shoulnd't come on depends on ECU maps though.
