I've heard of the top mounts wearing a bit not that common but with coilovers it can wear them a bit.
Rare for them to fail they do wear though thats all.
The bearings don't fail at a certian milage as such they do wine though a lot.
The bearing ASAIK hasn't been chnaged if it had this woulnd't have happened like this.
There two ways round it.
1) Fix the loom and wire it up (legal and best idea)
2) Wire the dashboard so that the abs light comes on for a few seconds ever time the key is turned and then goes off. Maplins etc will be bale to get you a PIC timer etc which will when given power switch on a...

Personaly I woulnd't bother unless you're going to stick sme decinet seats and use harness (properly) and remove the airbags etc show cages can be dangerous somtimes depending on crash typres there not a huge amount of good safe cages out there which do protect the occupents in a crash properly.

As far as I can remember few have ever asked where it is and noone fiddes with it bar swopping the sensor wires round which don't need to get to the alarm for.
