put the key in the ignition and while turning the key to start the engine press the button on the fob just ever so slightly. Should start first time......well it's worth a go. This works for me if the key sometimes doesn't disarm the immobilizer. This is because the solder inside the fob cracks...
from what I've researched the shift action between gears should be smooth with no crunching, assuming the clutch is also in good condition.
When it starts jumping out of gear, especially 3rd gear it's not a good sign!!!!!
the reason I asked the question is that before I bought my ph1 172 I went and looked at many other 172s and quite a lot of cups most I went to see had a receipt for a replacement gearbox. Must be a very common problem
