Please Help: Design of New Induction Kit

The cheapest way to test IK systems is by firstly calibrating the standard system by using pressure tappings at the critical points - atmospheric, just before air filter, after air filter, just before butterfly , or anywhere else that looks obstructive - then you can analyse where the main...

    set-up question

12mm bolts in the top hole will give you 2.0 degrees negative - seems to give ideal wear pattern on track. You will need aircraft spec high tensile 12.9 and matching nuts - I used Spiralock nuts M12 x 1.75 and as per their recdommendations torqued them to 180 NM. Have been fine all season.

How do I get my '51 plate to £200 bhp?

Fred, do you use the Schrick 0381/881/801 or custom cams? As has been said before the nominal timing on these cams makes them appear to aggressive for good mid-range, but that obviously does not seem to be an issue?

    Recommended - Mintex Pads

Fred, Probably not massive by track standards in terms of outright speed, but down from flat in third to low speed 1st/2nd gear corners - probably three of four times per run.

    Recommended - Mintex Pads

Fred, For sprints and hillclimbs initial bite from cold is often more important than fade resistance - any particular recommendations? Unfortunately no real opportunity to get them warm before the start either.

    clio/ktec quaife diff gearbox?

Surprised that the Quaife diff broke - it should be similar to that used in the Focus RS. The problem with plate diffs is firstly that the friction plates can wear and so the pre-load will reduce over time and that in many cases they are too big to fit in the standard housing/casings. Note that...

    Acoustic Valve... The Truth

Ben's point that it can not help torque is absolutely fundamental as it is on the wrong side of the air filter to create any useful resonant pulses to improve cylinder filling - the air filter will act as a damper. The only thing that has not been checked out is when it works - in addition to...

    Sorting the handling

If the offset, ET, on the Turinis is less than on the original wheels, (and I suspect it will be less, if as you say they make the track wider) it will have the effect of changing the steeering geometry. We used to have a deal on Fondmetal wheels and on some cars they destroyed the handling - we...

    Most Powerful N/A Clio 172/182

The Challenge cars run a 6 speed sadev sequential gearbox and are quite a bit lighter (have the manual at home and can check). Iirc they claim 0-100 mph in the low teens.

    Getting ready for the track

Alignment etc - Protyre at Exeter have been recommended. Also Tipton Garage, Tipton st jJhn, near Ottery St Mary. Sounds like the back of beyond, but has a good RR and can set up specialist ECU's, as well as doing chassis and engine work.

    Lowered Suspension - Worth it?

The biggest problem is if you lower it so much that you roll onto the bump stops or hit them because of a mid corner bump - it completely changes the characteristics of the car for the worse; unless you have long progressive bump stops you will suffer an enormous change in spring rate and awful...

    Trophy dampers

Only the fronts have the remote resevoir and despite what looks like a red adjuster on top of it, this seems to be fixed. The damping is very firm, but not harsh - nowhere near race settings. The set-up is good at the front in that it is relatively firm in bump which promotes good turn-in, and...

    Acoustic Valve?

I accept that it can probably be dispensed with when the car is modified and particularly when re-mapped, but as Renault are not charity, they must have a good reason for fitting it - does anyone actually know why?

    BHP power loss @ wheels

There is no formula - it depends on the power losses in the transmission and between the tyres and rollers. The most popular solution is to use a coast down test in which the rollers drive the transmission to assess the power absorbed. Different engine/gearbox layouts have different power losses...

Track Wheels & Tyre Size Question

Yoz2a - I am not doubting your word, but are Kumho V70A really not very special? The attraction is that they come in 205/45 x16 and are on the MSA list 1.b, with soft and medium compounds, whereas the Parada is not on 1.a or 1.b. At present my inclination is run 205/50x15 A048R. 585 mm diameter...

    Track tyres 205/45 x 16

Sometimes just restricted 1.a - but if run to regional regs 1.b are OK - they certainly need to be E marked./road legal and may have size limitations, if not on the lists, which for the Clio are smaller than o.e, so there is a bonus in sticking to the o.e size if suitable tyres are available -...

    172 cup manifold mods

BenR - looking at the inlet manifold, the runners are quite long - on cars with switchable length systems, they normally tend to switch to a short tract for top end power - my VR6 Schrick was at 4,000 (we made our own variable switching system and checked it on a r-road as optimum) and I think...

    Track tyres 205/45 x 16

I was up at Autosport 2006, so thought that I would take the opportunity to review tyres suitable for the Clio Trophy – 205/45x16 (diameter approx 590 mm) – which are suitable for hillclimbs and sprints and are on the MSA Blue Book lists 1.a or 1.b. Please note that I have tried to avoid...

The official Yokohama Parada Spec-2 Thread...

Mikerheman2k. It varies depending on local regs and whether it is a National event or not, but in some cases you will be bumped from the production class to the modified class or even the race class and with a relatively standard car that is not good. I am at Autosport tomorrow and will check...

The official Yokohama Parada Spec-2 Thread...

The only problem I have come across is that they are not in the 2006 MSA Blue Book in either list 1.a (production) or 1.b.

    182 weight distribution

MarkM - very interesting information and a very good result. To be absolutely correct you need the weight distribution ratio to be the same on both sides - just adding up the cross weights does not allow for this. RHS 360/203 = 1.773 LHS 348/191 = 1.822 The easiest way is to wind up the...

    182 Tyres - Sidewall stiffness

The offical blurb states that the Cup and Trophy have tyres with stiffer sidewalls. Is this a feature of the PE2, or just the version fitted to these cars. If the latter, what are the identifying marks? Also any idea if it is possible to find out on a factual basis what other makes of tyre have...

Factory / Ideal Toe Settings for 182?

Andy, My info is probably out of date, but in prod saloons the quickest Golfs used to run toe out at both ends. At the rear it needs to be done in very small increments as it can make the car very unpredictable. I would guess that these sort of settings are best for relatively slow and twisty...

    ***Tyre Poll***

P Zero Rosso are great, but I did not think that they come in the right sizes. also not so good in the wet when half worn. Was disappointed by F1's - good in the wet, but lacking outright precision or grip - improved in the dry when half worn. BTW neither of these comments relate to Clios.

Factory / Ideal Toe Settings for 182?

Firstly, apologies to Andy, I did not intend to misrepresent your advice re camber. Certainly I have found 1.30' negative quite acceptable on the road and even on my everyday diesel (i.e a very nose heavy car) it has not had any adverse affect on tyre wear - which is completely even across the...

Factory / Ideal Toe Settings for 182?

As per my answer for a similar query relating to the Trophy, providing that the dealer copied the part of the manual relating to the Trophy, then the settings are; Toe out 0.25' +/- 0.17' mine came at 0.10' toe-out Camber - negative 0.17' +/- 30' Mine came at 0.30' The Challenge...

    Toe-out settings for Trophy

Providing that the dealer copied the part of the manual which relates to the Trophy, the settings are toe-out 0.25' +/- 0.17'. Castor varies with ride height, checking mine it is 2.30' which is the mid point of the schedule. Camber is negative 0.17' +/- 30'; mine is about 30' with 1.30' on the...
