Im in the process of doing this to mine too. Found I couldnt unscrew it as I think it has corroded inside over time. Look on ebay I have just bought a new base for it only cost me £5, now im looking around for a shorted aerial to go with it :)

Excellent stuff, very strong and doesnt lose any diameter as you bend it.
I have used GDI in the past and decided not to use them again as I was unhappy with their level of service. Dont think they are all as good as you seem to make out they are.
The strut top covers are about £20 from Hill Power. They have magnets on the bottom of them, which hold them in place. Also yes they are stainless steel.
I havnt had a remap no. The car certainly pulls better now and is a lot smoother through the rev range. Seems to have improved acceleration all round really. Definately glad I had it done!
