For macro work have a look at some hoya close up filters. Work very well if your on a budget. Not sure how well they work on the kit lens, but Chris off here used them with a 50mm prime and it worked really well.

You may have turned noise redution on, so after the picture is taken is takes a few seconds to reduce noise levels. But this only normally happens when you've taken a long exposure, 2secs+ How old is the camera or how many actuations you have done?

Thanks Chris. Been talking with the chaps over at Talkphotography about the football ones, and they said there okay, but need much tighter cropping to frame the subject. Too many distractions in mine. But they were my first, so can only get better.
