I wouldn't bend the bracket if i were you... as the plastic part of the front bumper is not easy to modify. If you bend the bracket you'll adversely affect the fitment of your front bumper.
You could quite easily trim it as I have without changing your arch lining (I think :o). The only reason...
Bracket looks something like this...
I trimmed mine back (as shown) and haven't had any problems since. Hardly trimmed any either! You can also see how awesome my arch lining is. lulz.

I too have only been sideways once. was coming round a corner a little too hot and had to brake as there was a car ahead. just eased onto the brakes and hey presto. DK of the IOW.
I passed 2nd time with 2 minors :)
Welcome to the club.
I wouldn't bother with much on the car for now. Just stick with it and upgrade in a year or two.
My comment on the display of carbon was a general one and should be considered in every application, not just this one.
I will choose whether I read the thread or not.
Fin.
cba to read through this thread but carbon is gay as f**k. it's a vile substance and should never be on display. If you must fit it, paint it and hide it's evilness. Wheels MUST stay white.
