I used to do loads of miles in my last job in my 172 and i tried alsorts of fuel, optimax, 95, 97 super, ultimate etc and to be honest, it drove better on optimax and i also used to get more miles from a tank, this also used to show up im my milage log.
i'd say the sun symbol is your headlights as the faceplate may light up when you turn your headlights on.
The Y is prob an output to tell an electric aerial to raise or lower

Agreed but its only because its an older car, im sure when my 172 has matured to ten fine years it too will be full of things that dont work and get called character!!
The last time i tried this my revs maxed out at 6500rpm and an indicated 140mph i couldnt get it any faster although i did have two lads in it with all there gear for a week
It has been done before I think it was a German company, it used a shaft that ran across the front of the engine and the charger was located where the battery sits.
Is it possible to get hold of just a magnex center section for a 172? im fed up with mine rattling like mad and rather than bunging a standard one on is it possible to get hold of just the center and mate it up to the standard back box? I dont want the whole system as im not a fan of loud exhausts

RichMcc, i wouldnt bother taking it apart for that reason, your best off going to BenR ^ it would be much more worth your while.
This is a b*****d of a job due to the size of the engine and the engine bay!! you dont really need to replace the gaskets, i didnt anyway!!!
to make your life easier you need to remove the from slam panel where the bonnet lock is, everything else is quite easy apart from the aux belt...

That is a sweet looking car James, mine is looking like a dog at the min, very dirty and some mother F#@$%R managed to smash my mirror off and leave a nice red scrape of paint on my passenger door!!!
