tilt shift lens ftw (i don't know if this is the correct lens for what you need, but it's a cool lens nether the less)

needs to be a intel cpu, and quite a few motherboards wont work. My mate tried it, and unless you buy a copy a copy of OSX it's really hard to crack.

get a remote. set up camera in pitch black looking at the sky.. open shutter, leave for 1/2hour come back and close shutter and you'll see the stars spin.

As above use Lightroom, it's really good. Apertaure can do some smart things though, although I would never use them. Some really good videos on what it can do on Apple's website. http://www.apple.com/aperture/action/

Get the D50 and a prime 50mm 1.8 an amazing combo! edit, forgot to mention it costs penuts for the lens. Can be had for around £75.

Get anther D40 or leap and get the D80 < which is a super camera. Or like above if your feeling flush get a D90 or if you have more money than sense the D700.

There the same as the D40...pretty much. Not worth the extra pennies.
