Wouldn't need to unlock it. If you side load XBMC on there you can just install an addin and away you go.

Can you not see a temp on the panel? You set the temp using the red and blue buttons, then you press auto for the car to automatically keep the car at that temp

Comms fault could just be earth issue. Take a jump lead from the negative terminal on the battery and attach it to the gearbox casing and then try and start it. If it's that then it's one of the gearbox earths which are very common to corrode or snap.

There should be a small amount of play before going stiff. Its so you can rest your foot on it without engaging.
