I've never 'raced' one, been on a track day with one, or driven one - what are they like pace/handling/enjoyment wise?

Nope I think your thinking ahead, something a lot of people don't do, and acting upon it - even less people do that!
In a few months time you'll be financially sound, get a mortage under you belt, and you never know 3 years down the line you could line yourself up with another performance car.
It depends entirely on what you can get an engine for, and if you would rather buy a second hand block & service it out of the car (clutch, cambelt, entire, aux setup, poss water pump) to make it future proof, or just take the time to repair the engine you have now. First step will realistically...
As above just to clarify the cambelt tensioner was incorrectly fitted causing the irregular rattling, and the aux belt was not seated properly (outer edge hanging off the edge of the pulley).
Impact gun, then up,down,up,down,up,down over and over again even if it's only a tiny movement at first. Then with regular lashings of WD40 or Quantum lube it will come out easy peasy. Don't however hang of the end of a lever bar as you'll round everything lol!

Sounds like lambda or any of the ignition components, however before aimlessly slinging parts at the car get it on diagnostics to see if there are any clear fault codes.

I'd bet as above the timing is wrong - there is also a good chance a few other bits and bobs may have not been done properly. As usual you've got no real choice but to get it looked at by someone who knows.
