Dan you tried the fuel treatment you can pick up from Halfrauds and stuff like that, bit of a cheapskate option though.

No exactly the easiest engine todo by a mechanic on the floor with a trolley jack I assume?
Question is did he really change the belt?
If so like others have said, can you prove the belt failed? Send the bill to the place that supplied the belt.

When you start it up, does the coolant/anti-freeze in the header tank start bubbling straight away? And smell it for oil...

Try a large screwdriver or prybar under the bottom of the hub but above the bottom arm, as close to the ball joint as possible, and pull down, if it comes down a long way, probably your ball joint making the noise.

If you've checked everything else people have said, jack it up under the sill or wherever, and work the play on the wheel from side to side, and up and down, then spin it up as quickly as you can, & listen for a grinding noise.
Oh yeah, don't forget your Axle Stands & Wheel...
Yeah, probably started out being pushed between the inner of the tyre sidewall and the rim of the alloy. Can't see how they missed it though? :S
Maybe caused a slow leaking, so the pressure went down, so it fell out of place.

You ever had new tyres fitted on it at a garage?
If so they probably changed the valve, which to take out can be cut from the inside, then pulled through with a tool. Probably went to change the blade half way through the job and forgot?

1/4" Drive Ratchet
1/4" Drive 10mm Socket
Pick/Small screwdriver
Held in by 2X10mms ontop of the G/Box Bell housing, undo them (Don't drop them) Then pull it out a little, unclip the little block plug.
Then do same in reverse to fit new one.
