The reason diagnostics charges are seemingly expensive is that the equipment being used is often worth well in excess of a grand, even more in most cases - eg: Snap On gear. Different equipment gives you different levels of access. For instance take an RStuner - it will function perfectly well...

We have a 172 cup running similar bits and bobs from us apart from a homemade filtration setup/battery relcation etc that always gets around 184bhp & 167lb/ft - total monster to drive - makes my car feel like a 1.6 in contrast.

I think the point a lot of people are trying to convey is that for the same money you could buy a real sport. The point being that by carrying out a conversion of this nature you miss the main appeal of sport ownership which is the character of the chassis, braking etc. People often get hung up...
We built the trophy to Matt's specification, including the rather monstrous splitter. Its good for 186bhp in its current form and does have some lovely features on it. :)
