TomTom is a very good app, I used it on a, should I say trial basis lol. I have purchased Co-Pilot on my iP4 and its decent sat nav aswell. I think I prefer TomTom but cant justify the difference. Bearing in mind I already paid for the TomTom Car Kit.
Maybe try an Apple HW test to see if there are any issues
Insert Disk 1 that came with your MBP, turn on your machine, hold and press "D" before the gray screen comes on. Keep holding it down and it will take you to the Apple Hardware test screen (blue).

I've been using it since I got my iP4. I think its very good, good guidance, clear instructions, nice layout etc etc. A lot of people seem to prefer it over the TomTom (stand alone or iPhone App). The only downside for me is that you can only either have 2 bits of info...
