You don't need to get into Windows to recover the files. They can 'slave' the drive up to another system and get the data from it before they rebuild it.
Do you mean these?

If it powers you should be able to get the data from it. Make sure you get anything you need off it and they don't just install a new build before you get the data.

There isn't any need to upgrade really only the speed cameras, you might want to update the maps every year or so but you aren't forced to do it. I would say it's a very good investment if your going to places you don't know for example.
I've looked into it before and the TomTom of any sort comes up every time, most of the time the TomTom One is all that people need. It's simple to use and has all the features you need, you can also upgrade easily.
Jamie, best thing with the TomTom is you don't need to route plan as it does it as you go and you have the added benifit of the speed camera locations too.
Select 'Never dial a connection'.
You may have to reinstall the wireless adaptor as I've had it before where Windows just can't understand why it's now got to have a password to access it and it didn't before so it's easier to uninstall the adaptor and start again some times.
Encryption...back on the router with that address above and go to 'Wireless Settings'. Under Security Options select WPA-PSK and below that then enter a password to access the network which needs to be between 8 and 63 charactors, then click apply.
At this point it will throw you off as you...
Yep the router now does the dialing for you instead of your computer having to do it every time so your always connected.
If it works don't change anything to do with the connection ;)
Before you do the encryption which as you say you will need to do I would make sure you can access the internet first.
I haven't setup a Netgear with using the wired connection but if have that working then that should be fine.
