Well Ive got the 4.5" slash cut too. Had it for bout 9 months and has no rust whatsoever on it. Just heat marks on the middle section, back box is like new.

Oil temp gets a bit hot when continually booting it, but my oil cooler of santa will sort that out!
Do whatever you want, but personally wouldnt do anything to the body that you couldnt put back to standard.
My brother is having to be really careful how he mods his ECos because modded cossies go for a lot less than original ones.
Personally, I think theyre quick a trick touch when done right. The car has to be the part, done up nicely, with the neons hidden. Nothing worse than seeing a standard car with a neon tube below it.
Also, they look cool when parked up in a car park, not when your driving bout town!
If you can afford to, go for the whole car mate. Then you can rob everything out of it, dials etc.
Then you can sell any decent bits you dont want, then scrap it. Shouldnt work out too much more expensive then.
