Sounds that way, or the display cable has been trapped/damaged. Triple check the cable to ensure its in. Do you have the cd changer as well?

That sounds odd, when was the last time you has a stereo in using the clock display? Might be worth asking someone local to you if you can try it in their's. What happens if you attempt to put a cd in at after its powered up?

In my first post I meant did you have the radio on to see if it cut out etc because if you have a bad earth your lights will flicker and stereo may break up/switch off. Switching it off wouldn't effect if the lights come on or not!
