£1500 should get you a reasonable one. An immaculate one should cost no more than £2k IMO.
Mine was £1500 with a few good bits on it, but also a few niggles.
It supposedly hit the crank pulley. But I suspect a drift and a hammer could make a similar indentation if they really wanted to.

When you brake, the weight of the car 'shifts' forward. The tyres at the back have less weight pushing them into the tarmac and therefore have less grip. That means they're easier to lock.
However, if you're carrying weight in the boot, or towing, more weight remains over the rear tyres so...
