Yes and no a resistor does what it says "resists" voltage/current travelling through it. You can fit a resistor on but it would have to be big enough to cancel out any voltage that would be there. A diode is in essence the same as an LED in that it allows voltage to pass one way and not...

Rather then fitting a resistor, its better to fit a diode. Current/voltage will still be present with a resistor. Can't be arsed to explain it but a diode is a lot better. Stops the voltage/current passing through full stop.
