Depends if you want to be faster on a track day, or learning to be a better driver. The 172 will be quick, but a lot easier to drive. I wish I'd bought an E36 if I'm honest.
Engine/Gearbox - Fine if maintained well
Brakes - Uprate discs/pads. I've got DS2500 pads, brembo HC discs, braided hoses. No issues with them.
Cage - Wouldn't bother unless going 100% track car. If going 100% track car, I'd get a different car.
Suspension - Personal preference. I've got...
Cambelts more like £500 at a specialist (under 450 in jan). I wouldn't get a 182 without cup packs. No reason to get one over a 172 if not having the cup packs.
Yep, just shows the time/temp. Not sure if the controls work with only one of the wires connected though. It's very easy to remove the dash top, makes fitting the stereo easier as well.
Didn't think the difference would be that great. Do we get enough cold weather to justify the winter tyres? If I'll see the benefit I'd buy a set, but I don't want to be changing wheels twice a week!
Sounds like it's been a pain to sort, good work on sorting it! Get a poll up asap mods, or there will be x number of posts about which option people want.
Remove dash strips, undo the screws (torx) underneath. Remove upper steering column shroud, further 2 screws (just under speedo). Then remove 3 screws by windscreen (in the air vent that runs along the windscreen base). Finally remove 1 screw each side, plastic screws, close to a-pillar. Then...
They're actually ok in the wet, as long as you don't come across standing water. I used them on the way to Bedford, was pouring with rain. Was aquaplaning at 40mph, shallow puddles. For road use, on a daily driver, I can't see the benefit in using them.
OT, but AFAIK, decats are insurance voiders. IIRC there was a pheads thread where a guy crashed his impreza (write off), and he was trying to go to court to get a pay out. No idea how it turned out. All the insurance companies I've used have refused to insure with a decat.
Selling them soon as. Only done one (wet) day at Bedford on them. Currently on 15' Magnesium OZ F1's (selling as well), soon as they are seperated I'll pop a thread up.
IIRC DanR runs 888's daily. I've got a set in the garage, selling them soon (but 15's so probably not of interest). There's a noticeable difference in grip when cold, and they do not cope with standing water, they aquaplane on the shallowest puddles. Ok when dry or even damp, pretty much...
