i did the same thing few months back, got dials fitted that have a rev counter and plugged it all in but still no joy, aparently it needs to be connected to the gearbox as well

isnt ur front upper grill connected to the bumper though so wont it be a new front bumper? not really too clued up on mk2s, just looking at ur pictures

Recently ive found it quite tough to get my car into 1st gear, like changing down in traffic or changing from reverse when standing still, is my gearbox on the way out? done near 80k now but dont think its had a new gearbox before i owned it...
How much are new ones usually?
