Headlamp thing is just a rule of some circuits, as khunt says wouldnt do much on a clio. Mainly for cars with proper glass headlamps.

I could see the fumes and hear where it was coming from, was evident half of the noise wasnt coming from the back box. Guess it wouldnt do you any harm to point a hose at your exhaust so its wet, and then you'd see the water bubbling if it was blowing...

Cant see why thats so daft craig. As a young driver its going to cost you far more than £750 if you choose to claim, by the time you've paid your excess (£500 for under 25's) and considered loss of no claims discount, rise in insurance premium the following year etc etc.

If its noticably slower, and noticably louder, i doubt it'd be time of year mate. Have a look under the car with it running and see if you can see it blowing. Or take it to kwik fit, they'll put it up on the ramps and do an exhaust check for free.
