One of the daftest quotes i've ever read on here

I'm not saying who wrote that, nor where it is on here, but to me that is the daftest comment I think i've ever seen on here for a while.

Depends on the value of the vehicle, although only seen excesses this high in our corporate clients

Ive got a high excess. But its personal choice i guess.

If you are under 25 chances are you have a £500 excess anyway.

i thought mine being £450 was bad enough.. depends how desperate you are to get insured on a car I suppose - I guess its just worth the risk to some people, they hopefully wont crash!

Hmm doesnt really matter if shes a good driver or not, what about everyone else on the rd, even if she had a non fault accident she would still most likely be out of pocket for a while as they would make her pay then recover as its an uninsured losss

Still, personal choice really, if you don't think you're going to claim, why not take 3rd party or have a £1000 excess if you want the benefits.

My excess is something like 600 atm.

I have chosen that as:

A/ It makes me value the car more, so drive slower.
B/ The insurance costs fall
C/ Unless the car is a right off I wouldn't claim anyway as it will hike up my next premium by far too much

works for me but only on certain insurers. my insurance is up on the 14th of this month and my quote from admiral was £100 MORE than what I pay now despite 1 years ncb(paying £695 just now they wanted £794 for next year). so i went to bell, got a quote for myself at £550, put my mum and dad on as 2nd and 3rd driver and im paying £359. thats a pretty good saving in my book! my voluntary excess is £350 btw.

Add your dad AND your mum on your policy for even more savings!

1st couple of years my excess was around £400 but thats only cos that was minimum for young drivers, £750 is just far too much risk imo.

But if someone crashes into you, then you wont get your excess until they accept liability. A grand is a lot to me and no way I'd be able to get back on the road without it. Although my car is less worth than £2k and I'm a student with no savings

my cars worth about £4k.
thing is if someone crashed into me then I'd have a courtesy car, so like I did last year, I just left my car at the garage and used the courtesy car until i got it in writing from the other side that liability had been accepted, then i rang my insurance, told them to waive the excess, job's a good'un.

Plus if you get it fixed through the third parties insurance you don't have to pay your excess, only if like me you do it through your own.

Also adding £300 to my normal excess took £280 off my policy...

And I've always kept £2k in the bank for an emergency so could pay it if needs be.

i always bump my excess up to the max, if it means a lower premium then great, its saved me money over the past 10 years, and that money I have saved will easily pay for the excess i currently have so i'm not bothered.

I hardly think its the daftest thing I have heard on here though, far from it really, infact i think the OP has owned himself as it seems lots of others also think the way of higher excesses!

Paying £1150 on the bike with a £600 excess.

Thing is I would quite happily have a £1000 voluntary excess.

I say that because if I had to claim anything up to £1000 I would pay it out of my own money. The reason being that if I had to make a claim then because I don't have enough NCB to protect etc the net effect would be that my premium would go up to £5000 or something and I'd have to sell the bike anyway! So seeing as the repair would come out of my pocket rather than claiming I might as well benefit from a lower premium!

My insurance is standard excess of £250 - Third Party, Fire and Theft. Couldnt change the excess due to TPFT.

When I was under 25 I always had a high excess like £7-800 as it brought the premium down by a couple of hundred quid at least

As a young driver its going to cost you far more than £750 if you choose to claim, by the time you've paid your excess (£500 for under 25's) and considered loss of no claims discount, rise in insurance premium the following year etc etc.

i always understood that even if someone crahses into you, you have to pay the excess untyil the claim is sorted. So it doesnt matter if its your fault or not, the excess will still have to be paid initially, so is everyone saying they can afford to just shell out £750 in a oner?

For my younf drivers excess.

I was fortunate enough to be in a position where (for my last car) I could afford to crash it without reprisal unless there was a 3rd party.
