Initially I don't want anymore power than your had initially, so I am hoping to get away with it initially - but I will probably be buying the engine he has already built. Which gives me more future options. A diff will be on the to-do list.

It certainly sounds like cable has gone. The info I have picked up from here is to replace in pairs and use genuine cables only. I hope that helps!
