cranking voltage?
Fuel in the line at the rail?

I ran a Sparco 300 in my Clio, perfect wheel IMO.. The general "driving" of the Clio was improved so much, I couldn't go back to the standard bus steering wheel!
You gain more power across the rev range... thats what gives the perception of a "smoothed out" kick at 5,000rpm.
